BONUS- RUSTENBURG- The Rustenburg Local Municipality, having paid serious attention to the local economy, the jobs bloodbath in the mining industry as well as the high unemployment rates especially among the youth, including those without a matric certificate, have initiated the Mayoral Charity Golf Day, to be stages on 22 November 2019, at the Rustenburg Golf Club.
Although mining contributes over 55% to the city’s gross domestic product (GDP), events of recent years have caused a slow growth in the sector, forcing the City to focus on other areas for economic rejuvenation. To date the sector has cut as many as over 15 thousand jobs and with some mines in greater Rustenburg closing down operations.
According to Mr David Magae, municipal spokesperson, data available to the municipality, paints a bleak picture, of the growing number of youth who exit the basic education system and cannot further their studies, due to unavailability of funds and due to results which prevents them to qualify for TVET College or University enrollments. Having launched the 2040 Master Plan, the city has dug in its heels to diversify the economy while ensuring beneficiation at grass-roots level. The Municipality, through the Office of the Executive Mayor, then initiated the “School of Excellence” through which matric re-writes can be done at no cost, with support from the municipality on an annual basis.
Financial constraints in the past, have hampered on the progress and success of the School of Excellence, as stipends are paid to teachers, venues are paid for to accommodate the learners and contributions towards infrastructural upkeep.
It is therefore against this background that the Rustenburg Local Municipality is embarking on this venture of a Mayoral Charity Golf Day to raise funds for the school of Excellence to contribute to our youth through education.
