Budget approved - Prepare to pay more

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Residents will pay more for municipal services from July 1. Tariff increases approved at the tabling of the annual budget 2022/23 last week will come into effect in July.

At the council meeting on Wednesday June 15, Matlosana Executive Mayor James Tsolela also survived his first vote of no confidence in council brought against him by the EFF and DA.

In a statement re-leased on Facebook, the ANC party caucus in Matlosana said they reject “the craven opportunism and hypocrisy of EFF and DA in the City of Matlosana who have consistently sought to portray our councillors as unprincipled and cowardly’’.

“Our Cllr’s carry with them the aspirations of the electorate - and whether this motion of no confidence had been put to the vote via secret or open ballot, the Caucus is confident our Cllr’s will have acted in the best interests of our City,’’ the statement reads.

The main function of the day however, was the tabling of the budget.

Earlier this year, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa proposed electricity tariff increases of 8.6% for municipalities, but the proposal was hastily revised after a general outcry to 7,47%.

Matlosana residents can expect increases of 7,47 % for electricity, 6% for water and 4,8% for property rates.

Residents will start noticing changes in their July monthly account statements.
