Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The DA in Matlosana’s investigation into the municipal garage seems to have hit a nerve when an opposition Councillor threatened them with legal action when they visited the garage last week.
DA Cllr Johannes le Grange claimed him and his team were prevented by the Councillor, also a Member of the Mayoral Committee to conduct their oversight visit. He also provided a video where Cllr Fekile Mahlophe is seen trying to stop them from doing their inspection.
The oversight inspection followed numerous complaints by members of the public and service providers regarding persistent problems at the municipal garage. “These complaints related to poor administration, poor management, and poor performance which negatively affected service delivery,’’ Cllr Le Grange said.
“Upon our arrival at the garage, MMC Mahlophe tried to prevent us from conducting the oversight inspection, claiming that any such oversight work can only be facilitated through the relevant committee. He further contradicted himself by stating that DA Councillors may take photos and video recordings but that should those be released, he would take legal action.”
The municipal garage is supposed to service the municipality’s service delivery fleet but has been plagued by poor management and a lack of spare parts, which results in extensive delays in getting vehicles operational. These vehicles are critical for providing services including refuse collection, electrical repairs, water and sanitation services, the maintenance of roads, grass cutting and the like.
The DA said they found about 30 municipal vehicles parked outside the garage, many of them in a terrible state of disrepair. “We could only observe three workers on site while 20 service bays were vacant. It is evident that the Municipal Garage does not have the skills, parts and spares to service its own fleet.
“The DA has no intention of interfering in the administrative operations of the municipality, but it does have a mandate to conduct oversight, and bring these issues to Council for deliberation and intervention when necessary,’’ Le Gange said.
Matlosana Municipality did not comment on the DA’s allegations at the time of going to press.
