Lentswe, Klerksdorp - It has been a while now that Lentswe sees a Klerksdorp hawker at the corner OR Tambo and Voortrekker Streets feeding doves in the morning around 07:00.
Abdul Abdul who sells sweets, peanuts, and chappies, says he enjoys feeding the birds and seeing them eating in a group.
“These birds usually come to these shops in front of my business and sometimes come down and look for food. I then decided to buy maize for them and feed them.
“I really enjoy feeding them and see them eating in a group. Sometimes I even feel like I’m feeding some poor kids and helping, because these birds are still living things like a human being. It is so sad seeing some people hurting or killing them,” Abdul said.
Abdul who has been a hawker for almost 13 years, says he has been feeding these doves for almost 8 to 9 years now.
“I’m spending 10kg maize in a week to feed them every day when I’m at work. I don’t even know where these birds come from, but their numbers increase almost every day,” he said with a smile.
