Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The driver of a white Quantum taxi with a trailer was fined and the taxi and trailer were impounded by Matlosana traffic officers on Monday afternoon 15 January after it was stopped on the N12 in Klerksdorp and found that it has no permit and the trailer is unroadworthy.

The 15 seater taxi was transporting 26 people, all from Zimbabwe. The taxi driver said they were from Polokwane in Limpopo on their way to Cape Town.

They were later taken to the Klerksdorp Home Affairs for verification of their identity and it was found that some are illegally in the country.

Eight of them aged between 19 to 36 years old were charged with contravening the Immigration Act. They are held in Stilfontein police cells.

Later the driver and his assistant who were in possession of their passports pretended to go to a shop, but then ran away. It is now suspected that their passports were forged.

Traffic officers who were on duty were Phillip Maohwisa, James Mofokeng and Osborn Kaibe.
