Lentswe, Klerksdorp - While the police are still searching for the killers of a much loved businessman of Orkney, tributes are pouring in on social media for Imtiyaaz Bata who was gunned down in cold blood.

Bata was inside Vegas Department Store in Shakespeare Avenue on Monday 9 July shortly after noon when three thugs entered the shop demanding money. An employee who was also inside the shop, told the police she fell down, scared and heard a shot being fired. According to W/O Elize Kruger, police spokesperson, Bata was shot in the chest. He died on the scene. The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Bata was known as a compassionate businessman with a heart of gold. Minty Muhammad Ameen said on Facebook that Bata was an outstanding person in the community.

Jannette Bekker of the Orkneypark Community Forum remembers Bata fondly when she started working at Absa Orkney in 2001. “He made me feel so welcome in Orkney. Such a good heart. He helped so many people. Today, he is gone. Not by choice and my heart breaks. We will miss you Mr Bata. May you rest in peace,’’ she wrote on the community page.

A resident of Orkney, Boitshepo Les commented regarding safety issues in Orkney saying the town has become a harbour for criminals. “Orkney SAPS must start patrolling the streets of Orkney day in and day out. We are even afraid of walking to the CBD from Orkney Park. This is bad,’’ she said on Klerksdorp Record’s Facebook page.

The police are investigating and no arrests have been made yet.
