Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A security guard was wounded in this past weekend’s gunfights in Orkney.

Late night on Friday and Saturday, gunshots were heard sporadically during the night in the area where illegal miners are active.

According to Sgt Amogelang Mabihi, police spokesperson, security guards were busy with routine patrols at the site of the abandoned ventilation shaft next to Lourenspark when they came across Zama-Zamas who were digging illegally at the site.

“Crossfire ensued leaving one guard (27) injured on the left side of his body.

The police have registered a case of attempted murder,’’ Sgt Mabihi said.

Lentswe was told that the Zama-Zamas dug from underground to the surface after the ventilation shaft was closed up with concrete.
It took them months but at least 50 illegal minders resurfaced on Friday and another 50 on Saturday night.

The guard, Rodney Kgwasi was taken to hospital for medical attention. No arrests have been made.
