Lentswe, Jouberton - A 38-year-old woman was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment following the murder of her then 9-year-old biological daughter and attempted murder of her son (7) in August 2018.

According to the Klerksdorp Cluster spokesperson Sgt Amogelang Mabihi, it is alleged that the mother, who was not staying with the kids as they were legally placed under the guardianship of their paternal grandparents, went to visit her kids at school.

“After buying them some fat cakes that were spiked with organic phosphate poison (commonly known as 2 step), she gave them the food, but the boy refused to eat and the girl ate hers. The kids went home to their grandparents where the girl was later declared dead the same day,” Sgt Mabihi said.

Sgt Mabihi said a case of inquest was registered at Jouberton police station where thorough investigation and interrogation of the mother ensued, where she ultimately confessed that she poisoned her kids.

She was arrested and the inquest changed to murder. She was sentenced on Friday 10 January.

The mother cannot be identified to protect her son’s identity.
