Bullets fly in robbery

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - All hell broke loose in the CBD and Oudorp earlier this week when robbers ambushed a Fidelity Guard (FG) vehicle and opened fire.

The security personnel were ambushed at Choppies when two armed men overpowered them in front of the supermarket at about 08:40 on Monday 25 March.

According to Sgt Amogelang Mabihi, police spokesperson, the robbers took the cashbox containing an undisclosed amount of cash and a 9mm pistol from the security officer before fleeing in a white VW Jetta 6.

Initial reports stated that they fled in a white VW Polo but police confirmed the vehicle to be a Jetta 6. The guard was taken to Anncron Hospital to be treated for shock.

While the robbers sped away from the crime scene, a FG support vehicle was in hot pursuit. The driver, armed security guard, Wayne Murray, managed to ram the robbers’ getaway vehicle in Swart Street, Oudorp.

Lentswe talked to a rattled Murray on the scene... He said the robbers got out of the vehicle and opened fire on him with AK47s before they sped away again in the direction of Oleander Park where more shots were allegedly fired. He never managed to fire his .38 special but escaped unharmed.

“The suspects are at large and the police are investigating a cash in transit heist.”
