Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Matlosana Municipality, in collaboration with national and provincial aquatic bodies, has announced a crucial “Learn to Swim and Water Safety Programme” aimed at equipping local residents with essential lifesaving skills ahead of the busy festive season. The initiative is being delivered by the City’s Sports and Recreation Department in partnership with Swimming South Africa, Lifesaving South Africa, and North West Swimming, bringing expert instructors and pro-
fessional lifeguards to local communities.
With the holidays fast approaching, the programme aims to significantly reduce water-related incidents by promoting responsible behaviour and teaching foundational swimming skills.
The core objectives of the initiative are:
- To promote water safety awareness across Matlosana communities.
- To teach basic swimming skills to children and youth.
- To reduce drowning incidents through proper education and safety practices.
- To encourage healthy participation in aquatic sport.
- To strengthen partnerships with National and Provincial aquatic bodies.
The programme will be hosted at various municipal swimming pools throughout the region to ensure maximum accessibility for all residents.
Each session will run from 09:00 to 12:00 and will include practical swimming lessons, water safety demonstrations, and direct engagement with certified instructors and lifeguards.
The Municipality encourages parents, schools, and all community members to support and participate in this vital programme, which forms part of the city’s broader commitment to community well-being and sports development.
