The tournament was held on Saturday 2 June at Namakgale Community Centre at Phalaborwa, Limpopo by Sempai Sydeck Monyela who operates a dojo in Limpopo.
According to Matlosana Karate Team Sensei, Thomas Mayekani, they were represented by a team of 87 karatekas.
Mayekani said the local team managed to collect 43 trophies in total, with 12 of them claiming respective champion divisions.
Other trophies and medals were granted to other positions like second and third levels.
He said for some of their participants, it was the last preparation for them to take part in the international cup where 40 players of his team were selected to attend.
“It was not that tough for us like other tournaments, the challenge was that we had a high number and had to play against each other where we had to eliminate each other,” he said.
They took first place with KwaZulu-Natal second, Limpopo third and Mpumalanga fourth.
The International Dream Karate Cup will be held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 June.
Next week Saturday
16 June there will be the ‘Annual Local is Lekker tournament’ at the Alabama Hall for locals only.
Mayekani said they thank the Dr Kenneth Kaunda regional department of Sport for always making sure the team travels around representing the province.
