Getting to know Impala Rustenburg

Posted in Home

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Impala Rustenburg is a platinum producer and a subsidiary of Implats, which is a South African company listed on the
Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The management of Impala are pleased to inform key stakeholders about a series of initiatives that have been planned to inform our communities, employees and shareholders about the positive impact our operations have had, and continue to have, in and around Rustenburg.

We also want to showcase how platinum and the contribution of our people - everyday - makes a difference. In the coming weeks the Rustenburg Herald editorial team will be liaising with the mine management. Impala Rustenburg will share information, so readers can get to know more about the mine, its impact on the surrounding communities and local businesses, as well as its contribution to the people and economy of Rustenburg and surrounds, the province, and South Africa as a whole.
Impala Rustenburg is also sponsoring a weekly drive-time slot at 6.10pm every Friday on Radio Mafisa FM 93.4 - where various senior managers and specialists will share their knowledge in mining, career development, health, skills development, community engagements, as well as the various projects the mine is involved in. Impala Rustenburg will also highlight any outstanding achievements, such as graduating bursary students and safety achievements, as well as what the company is doing, over and above compliance with the requirements of the law, to make a difference in the lives of our employees and community members.
Impala Rustenburg has a dedicated stakeholder engagement department, which works closely with the team at the mine to make sure the operation has an on-the-ground presence to engage with elected community leadership representatives and local government structures, and to provide the true meaning to “Platinum making a difference”, which these series of articles will highlight. We will regularly update you on the progress made with the many community projects currently underway. Impala Rustenburg is the largest employer in our region. This operation encompasses a 10-shaft mining complex with three concentrators and a smelting operation with three furnaces.
The mine currently employs more than 27 000 employees as well as more than 10 000 contractors. It is a well-known statistic that each employee supports, directly or indirectly in many cases, up to 10 dependents – which means more than 270 000 people rely on Impala Rustenburg for their wellbeing.
Now, one must also take into account that the mines as far as possible use local companies to provide supplies, goods and services needed for its operations - anything from supplying milk and sugar to strategic commodities and services such as scraper winches and contract mining, among others, are procured locally. In turn, these suppliers also employ people from our local communities, so the impact of the mines is much, much greater than the people we employ. Look out for further updates in forthcoming Rustenburg Herald publications and remember to tune in to Radio Mafisa FM 93.4 on Fridays at 6:10pm to find out how platinum truly does make a difference.
