Matlosana refutes Eskom notice

By Salomé Kotzé

The Matlosana Municipality has issued a notice of their own.

A public notice is circulating on social media whereby the Municipal Manager (MM) informs the community that there will be “no electrical disconnections in the Klerksdorp area’’.

Klerksdorp Record sent an enquiry hours ago about the state of affairs and despite promises to issue a press statement, there is no official word from the spokesperson.

Unofficially though, Klerksdorp Record was told it is a hoax and a lie… some DA councillors also commented on social media that they’ve seen the payments to Eskom by Matlosana and that people should remain calm and wait for a statement from the MM.

Klerksdorp Record confirmed legitimacy of the notice after comments on social media and whatsapp groups suggested that the notice was placed with malicious intent.

The public notice was published and paid for by Eskom to notify the public of their intention to cut electricity supply to the public due to escalating municipal debt. “Unfortunately, conditions set by Eskom have not been met by the municipality and Eskom has taken a decision to continue with the previously communicated interruptions,’’ the notice reads.

Matlosana’s notice states that the Eskom account for October is paid and that a payment plan exists between the municipality and the power supplier.

Klerksdorp Record learned that Roger Nkhumise (MM) has a meeting with Eskom tomorrow morning (22 November).

Eskom threatens Klerksdorp with power cuts

Residents of Klerksdorp choked in their morning coffee reading Klerksdorp Record this morning. Eskom published a notice of their decision to interrupt bulk electricity supply to Matlosana Local Municipality from 5 December.

People reacted with shock and outrage on several social media platforms. According to the notice, interruption will start on 5 December and will be organised on a weekly basis. The first week (5-11 December) power will be turned off for short periods but from the third week (19 December onwards) power will be switched off from 06:00-20:00.

The notice also reads that Eskom may, upon 15 calendar days’ notice, disconnect electricity entirely and indefinitely to the area.

The public notice was published and paid for by Eskom to notify the public of their intention to cut electricity supply to the public due to escalating municipal debt. “Unfortunately, conditions set by Eskom have not been met by the municipality and Eskom has taken a decision to continue with the previously communicated interruptions,’’ the statement reads.

Ntswaki Makgetha, municipal spokesperson, said they are preparing a statement about the notice.
