Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A foreign couple was arrested in Klerksdorp by the Hawks’ Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) for illegal possession of drugs and dealing in drugs.

According to the provincial spokesperson, Capt Tlangelani Rikhotso, the arrests followed a tip-off about drugs being sold from a parked vehicle in the CBD. The suspect was ambushed on Monday 8 July after parking his vehicle in OR Tambo Street near a popular supermarket.

“The vehicle was searched and a full packet of mandrax tablets was found. When interviewed, the suspect claimed to be from another town, however the investigators found receipts in his vehicle that revealed his Klerksdorp address.

“The team proceeded to the rental apartment belonging to the suspect where they found his partner. The apartment was thoroughly searched and more packets of mandrax tablets and cocaine were uncovered,” Captain Rikhotso said.

The value of the drugs is estimated to be worth approximately R100 000.

Mercia Vitorino Massango (30) from Mozambique and her husband, Musa Likongolo (47) from Tanzania appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court facing charges of illegal possession of drugs and dealing in drugs. The case was postponed and both are still in custody.

Maj Genl Patrick Mbotho of the Hawks warned that drugs are taking many people’s lives and urged the community to assist the police by reporting drug dealers.
