Lentswe, Potchefstroom - The man arrested in connection with the attempted murder of an Ikageng police officer appeared in the Potchefstroom Magi-strates Court.

Dumisani Nene (37) was remanded in custody and will appear again on Thursday 18 July for a formal bail application.

According to the North West police spokesperson Lt Col Amanda Funani, Nene’s court appearance came after he allegedly stabbed a 33-year-old Sergeant with a knife at Ext 11 in Ikageng on Friday 28 July.

“It is alleged that the police officer was arresting the suspect on a case of theft which was allegedly committed beginning of June.

According to information available at this stage, the suspect allegedly resisted the arrest and stabbed the police officer twice with a knife and fled the scene.

“The police officer was rushed to hospital where he was treated. Following a manhunt, the suspect was ultimately arrested in Ikageng on Tuesday 2 July,” Lt Col Funani said.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lt Genl Baile Motswenyane condemned the attack and applauded the police in Ikageng for their swift reaction that led to the arrest of the suspect. She said that no extent of attacks will deter the police from doing their work.
