NOORDWESTER – COLIGNY - Raising awareness on cancer and taking action to create a world where individuals are seen as a whole person, not just a diagnosis, on Wednesday, 5 November the SAPS Women’s Network and Men for Change from Lichtenburg, Atamelang, Biesiesvlei, Coligny, Delareyville, Itsoseng, Ottosdal, Sannieshof, K9 unit and Local Criminal Record Centre gathered together at Mmelegi Primary School in Coligny for cancer public education.
There was an aerobics session led by Mr Moale from the Department of Health and Pastor Gobusamang Matshego. Entrance to the event was a packet of adult nappies and all donations were delivered to two identified old age homes.
The occasion commenced with an opening prayer led by Chaplain W/O Mogamisi, who delivered a scripture reading from the book of Daniel.
During the sermon, W/O Mogamisi emphasised the importance of a healthy lifestyle and dietary choices, citing the example of Joseph from the Bible, who ate vegetables for ten days and drank only water.
The programme director, Constable Pitso, welcomed all the guests and extended gratitude and acknowledged to the sponsors in attendance: Old Mutual, Hyundai, Absa Bank and Aurum. These partners joined forces with the SAPS to make a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer and to render their services. A candlelight ceremony was held in honour and remembrance of those diagnosed with, affected by and survivors of cancer.
Sergeant Mpho Setlhare rendered the purpose of the event - she emphasised that early detection, prevention and treatment are crucial in fighting this disease. Furthermore, she explained the different colours associated with various types of cancer.
The event featured four inspiring guest speakers who are cancer survivors. Ms Matebele, a breast cancer survivor, shared her journey of diagnosis, treatment, and survival. Constable Selepe, also a cancer survivor, shared his experience of diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the importance of seeking medical attention when symptoms arise.
Ms Kelebogile Ramatheletsa, a breast cancer survivor, shared her emotional journey of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, emphasising the importance of self-care, regular check-ups, and support for those living with cancer. Mr Melato, a male breast cancer survivor, shared his story of diagnosis, treatment, and survival, sharing how the Creator was merciful to him during his journey.
After conclusion of the messages of the guest speakers, they were honoured with gifts for sharing their unique experiences with the audience. Their testimonies served as a powerful reminder of hope.
The Fight Against Cancer Awareness Day was a resounding success, with attendees leaving with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to fight cancer.
The organisation and its partners pledged to continue the fight against cancer and promoting healthy living in the community.
