STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: For dozens of children, Thursday, 9 October, marked the start of a clearer and brighter future when Optometrist Lesego Mokoka turned her long-held dream into reality.
Two years ago, Mokoka set out with a vision to bring clear sight, and new opportunities, to children in rural communities.
Through school screenings conducted at several schools across the Vryburg district, she discovered how many young learners, aged between 6 and 17, were struggling daily without the glasses they needed. “The challenges were many,” Mokoka shared. “But I never gave up hope. When every door seemed to close, Standard Bank stepped in and turned this dream into reality.” Thanks to this partnership, 43 children have now received the invaluable gift of sight. The handover of the spectacles took place on World Sight Day, celebrated globally on 9 October, with both Optometrist Mokoka and Standard Bank joining in the special occasion. These children have received glasses for the very first time in their lives. During the event, Mokoka took time to explain to parents and children how to properly care for their new glasses, ensuring they last as long as possible. Expressing her gratitude, she said, “A heartfelt thank you to Standard Bank for giving life to a dream that continues to change lives.” Optometrist Mokoka encourages everyone, young and old, to take charge of their eye health. “You only have one pair of eyes,” she reminded. “Protect them. Care for them.”
