STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Football fever is set to grip Vryburg this Workers’ Day, Wednesday, 1 May, as retired Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs central defender Fabian McCarthy brings a star-studded sports festival to town through his self-titled foundation, in collaboration with the South African Football Legends.
The four-day festival, which includes football, distance running, and golf, aims to unearth raw sporting talent for further development, while offering locals the opportunity to engage with some of South Africa’s most celebrated football figures. Festivities will kick off at Colridge Stadium at 08:00, where crowds are expected to flock to witness the Primary School Futsal Soccer Tournament and the High Schools Under-19 Super 16 tournament. Teams from across the region will battle it out for supremacy, with scouts and legends watching closely. A major highlight of the festival will be the presence of Orlando Pirates’ DSTV Diski Challenge team, coached by club legend Joseph “Dukuduku” Makhanya. Local talent will not only showcase their skills but also gain invaluable exposure to professional-level football. Adding further prestige to the event, football greats such as Pollen “Trompies” Ndlanya, Brian Baloyi, James Mothibi and Eddie Dinha will be in attendance, lending their expertise and encouragement to the aspiring stars. On Sunday, 4 May at 09:00, the Masters Top 4 Knockout will see Vryburg Masters, Dr RS FC, Big 5 and Benchmark compete in a classic showdown of experience and passion for the game. The weekend continues with 5km and 10km fun runs held on the morning of the Soweto Derby, followed by a Golf Day on Sunday to conclude the festival in style. The Fabian McCarthy Foundation, known for its commitment to promoting academic excellence through sport, continues to integrate education-focused initiatives into its programme, ensuring that talent development goes hand-in-hand with personal growth. Football, fun, and community spirit will be the order of the day as Vryburg hosts this thrilling blend of sport and legacy.
