Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Tshepo Makabe from Jouberton competed at the conductors’ solo competition at Empangeni the past weekend. The competition on Saturday October 11 consisted of school choir conductors across the country, with Makabe representing Mmokeng Secondary school in Kanana.
He is the choir conductor in that school. The competition had different voice part categories - in the bass/baritone category he ended second out of 13 singers. He sang a song called La Vendetta by Mozart. The next solo competition that he will compete in will be taking place at the Free State Musicon in Bloemfontein.
Nominated for student of the year
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Lesego Molema, more commonly known as Oscar, from Jouberton Ext 21, has received a nomination for Best Student of the Year by the South African Agricultural Awards. Oscar is a BSc Animal Science (Hons) student at NWU and has demonstrated academic excellence since his first year.
He has been temporarily employed by the university to assist students studying with their modules, under the direction of a lecturer. Oscar is the founding member of the Animal Science Student Chapter, which was awarded the Best Social Responsibility and Awareness Structure of 2025 by Student Life.
Hartbeesfontein deep in sewerage
Lentswe, Hartbeesfontein - The ongoing sanitation crisis is deepening by the day with residents now left without access to a functioning honey sucker service. Maritha Coetzee, DA PR Councillor, calls on the municipality to urgently restore the honey sucker service to all affected areas, provide a full report on the status of sanitation contracts and funding, and implement an emergency plan to prevent further sewage overflows.
New plan for meter readings
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The City of Matlosana Municipality informed consumers that its contract with Mosekate Trading and Projects Company, which commenced 2021 to provide meter reading services for water and electricity, expired on September 30. Ntswaki Makgetha, municipal spokesperson, said the expiration of the contract will not affect meter readings, as all September readings for October 2025 accounts have been collected. For November 2025 accounts, consumers are requested to submit their October meter readings via email to
Police want a safer festive season
Lentswe, Orkney - During the festive holidays, the South African government is implementing a comprehensive strategy to address the heightened risk of criminal activity. This initiative, known as Safer Festive Season operations, is spearheaded by the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster. The MEC for Community Safety & Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, and the Acting Provincial Commissioner of NW, Major General Patrick Asaneng, will launch the Provincial Safer Festive Season Operations at Mpheqeke Stadium, Kanana on Friday October 17. The operations will run from October 1 until January 31, 2026, in conjunction with Operation Shanela.
