MAHIKENG MAIL - MAHIKENG: The residents of Seweding are still grappling with the unbearable reality of living amidst raw sewage, with no end in sight. It’s heart-breaking that as families prepare to celebrate the festive season with loved ones, they’re forced to endure this inhumane situation.

The 50-year-old asbestos sewage pipe along Bray Road has been a persistent problem and it’s shocking that despite being aware of the issue, authorities like Premier Lazarus Mokgosi, MEC Oageng Molapise, and Ngaka Modiri Molema District Mayor, Khumalo Molefe, have failed to take decisive action. The situation has dragged on for five months, with service providers’ machines frequently breaking down, exacerbating the crisis. Children are falling ill, and the stench is overwhelming, making it hard for residents to cope. It’s appalling that politicians seem to be enjoying themselves while the people they serve suffer.
The community is calling for accountability, wanting the municipality to be held liable for their health issues and the ongoing sewage crisis.
The residents are also questioning the Human Rights Commission’s silence on the ongoing pollution, wondering why they’re being ignored despite reports of their crisis. It’s a stark reminder that some communities are still being left behind. The Deputy Minister’s theory of holding municipalities accountable is being put to the test and it’s crucial that action is taken to address this injustice.
As Christmas approaches, the people of Seweding are left wondering if they’ll ever experience dignity and basic human rights.
It’s time for the authorities to prioritise their well-being and take concrete steps to resolve this crisis once and for all.
