MAHIKENG MAIL - MAHIKENG: Viola Motsumi, MEC for the North West Department of Education, has praised Mokete Flatela, a 56-year-old Mathematics and Science teacher, for securing 400 desks for his school, Nkang Mahlale Secondary School in Jouberton Township.
Flatela’s initiative addresses the school’s furniture shortage, improving the learning environment for students. His approach embodies the spirit of community-driven solutions, reflecting his belief in being part of the solution rather than adding to the problem.
Flatela’s track record of proactive problem-solving also includes renovating Lerothodi Secondary School with R3 million from nearby mines. At Nkang Mahlale, he took the lead, writing to private sector companies for support, resulting in Harmony Gold Mine donating 400 desks. “I was over the moon,” Flatela said, highlighting his passion for creating a conducive learning environment.
MEC Motsumi lauded Flatela’s activism, urging communities to emulate his example. “The government doesn’t have all the resources; we need more Mr Flatelas,” she said, thanking Harmony Gold Mine for their donation. The desks are being delivered, with 200 already received, promising a brighter future for Nkang Mahlale’s learners.
On Friday, 12 December Harmony Gold Mine delivered the first 200 double desks and the other 200 is reported to be delivered this coming week.
