MAHIKENG MAIL – MAHIKENG: Calm has been restored in Seweding after residents took to the streets to protest the abandonment of a sewage pumping site by a service provider.
The site, which had been pumping sewage water from broken pipes, was left unattended after the provider allegedly failed to receive payment - resulting in dirty sewage flooding some residents’ homes. The residents, fed up with the situation, barricaded roads with stones and burning tyres, calling for Ngaka Modiri Molema Mayor, Khumalo Molefe, to address the issue.
The protest seems to have yielded results, as the service provider has since returned to the site. However, residents remain concerned about the bad conditions they are forced to live in. They expressed frustration and desperation stating that it seems the government was waiting for a disaster to occur before taking action. “The government surely wants to get a report of death and serious illness before they repair the pipe,” one resident said.
The residents are now exploring options to report the situation to the Human Rights Commission, questioning whether it was acceptable for them to be subjected to such dire living conditions. They are demanding a permanent solution to the sewage problem and accountability from the authorities. The situation remains tense, but residents are determined to continue pushing for change and ensuring their voices are heard.
