MAHIKENG MAIL - MAHIKENG: The closure of the Atamelang Bus company has left thousands of commuters in limbo, struggling to find alternative transportation to work, school and other essential destinations.
For many residents the bus company had been providing a reliable and affordable mode of transportation for over 20 years.
One resident, who works as a cleaner, expressed her frustration and concern about the impact of the closure of the company. She said she had relied on the bus company for more than 15 years to get to both work and home and despite the challenges the previous company had, they at least knew that they could get to work - until the sudden absence of buses and media reports of the company closing shop.
The cleaner, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that she has no other means of transportation and was forced to spend a substantial portion of her daily wages on alternative transport. She lamented the fact that the bus company had been a lifeline for her and many others in the community, providing a vital service that allowed them to access employment, education and other opportunities.
The closure has not only disrupted her daily routine but also placed a significant financial burden on her.
Many commuters are now forced to rely on more expensive and often unreliable transportation options adding to the challenges they are already facing.
With limited options available, commuters are left to navigate a complex situation and often costly transportation which can have far-reaching consequences for their economic and social well-being. The residents have called on the authorities to intervene and find a solution to the transportation crisis as announced recently that there were new service providers to be appointed by the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management.
Until then, many residents will continue to face significant challenges in getting to work, school and other essential destinations, highlighting the need for a sustainable solution to the existing transportation crisis.
