Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Matlosana Municipality has confirmed its inclusion in a national Eskom debt relief programme, which has resulted in a significant write-off of the municipality’s outstanding debt.
The Municipal Manager, Lesego Seametso, and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Mercy Phetla, acknowledged the recent announcement of the Municipal Debt Relief Programme. The programme has processed a total of R3.5 billion in debt write-offs for 11 municipalities, including Matlosana.

The municipality has specifically benefited from a one-third debt write-off amounting to R470 276 976, 50. This relief was part of the total processed by Eskom in November 2025.
The City has welcomed the initiative, stating that the debt write-off will reflect on the next Eskom invoices and will assist in alleviating financial pressures on municipal services.

The municipality has committed to ensuring that the debt relief is managed transparently and that the savings are directed toward essential service delivery and community development projects.
