Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Democratic Alliance in Matlosana voted against the budget they say will put pressure on residents with another round of tariff increases. These increases come while the municipality already ranks among the highest in the country for property rates, said DA Cllr Gerhard Strydom.
He said the continued escalation in service tariffs-ranging from water 4.8%, electricity 12%, sanitation 4.4%, to property rates 6%, will place a significant burden on families and small businesses, many of which are already struggling in a stagnant economy.
“These increases are unacceptable since residents are paying more while service delivery is failing.’’
New valuations come into effect on July 1 2025.
The increase in property rates will be significantly higher depending on the percentage increase in the valuation of a property.
“These increases will further stifle growth, deter investment, and exacerbate poverty. What we are witnessing is an insult to the livelihoods of ordinary citizens. Residents are expected to pay more yet receive less in return. It is unaffordable and unjust,’’ he continued.
Compounding these issues are serious concerns about the integrity of the municipal administration and leadership.
Numerous allegations of and investigations point to deep-rooted corruption, mismanagement of public funds, and a lack of accountability.
“Our residents’ hard-earned money entrusted to this administration is being misused while infrastructure crumbles and services deteriorate.’’
