Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Selala family celebrated the 100th birthday of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Maletsie Agnes Selala was born on August 20 1925 at Thaba Nchu in the Free State. She is the fifth child of the late Mohlolo Nthoba and Mametswana Selala. She moved to the Transvaal in the forties and got married to John Shikongo. They were blessed with five sons and a daughter. Three of her sons are still alive and she has 27 grandchildren and thirty greatgrandchildren.
Her longevity is the result of respect and living by Exodus 20:12: “Honour your father and mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God has given you”. She is a devout Christian.
Gogo loves eating simple food without spices.
She loves veggies and fruits and eats chicken and red meat. Her historic memory is remembering soldiers marching in the Free State during World War ll, and the food scarcity with no maize meal in South Africa.
She remembers how they had to eat blackcorn. Hence she doesn’t like food to be thrown away but rather given to someone.
Her advice to the younger generation? Fear God and respect young and old.
