Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Matlosana Chess Association is a local structure that’s been tasked with promoting chess within the Matlosana Municipality. It is the brainchild of the Department of Sport. Their journey to the Moja tournament at Riversands Conferencing in Fourways on April 26 was riddled with setbacks. The association had financial struggles but managed to compete.
Four days before the event their sponsor dropped out. It was a sponsorship for accommodation and transport. Parents paid registration for their kids.
They visited the mayor’s office on April 23, but the mayor had a meeting for the whole day. They visited again the next day and met the mayor, asking financial assistance on short notice.
The mayor promised to help and he delivered on the promise he made.
They thank Fikile Mahlope to allow them to attend the tournament and give exposure to their players to play against gifted international players.
Results: C section was won by Mittermaier Gunther; ladies section by WIM February Jesse Nikki, B section by Mailula Matsobane and Prestige section by Musonda Chola.
