From the ashes, SA’s oldest Casino Resort is reborn with Phase 1 launch of Palmetto Restaurant.
MAHIKENG MAIL-MAHIKENG: The Mmabatho Palms Hotel Casino Convention Resort has launched its new dining establishment: Palmetto Restaurant and Lounge under Peermont’s resort in Mahikeng, which is the oldest casino in South Africa.

The resort has only been able to provide casino and limited conferencing and leisure facilities after it was ravaged by a fire in 2021.  “We’ve faced many operational challenges in recent years, but Peermont has done everything in our power to sustain local jobs,’ said Peermont CEO Nigel Atherton.  “We are continuing with our bid to move our casino licence to Rustenburg and should the casino relocate, it will greatly help with keeping Mmabatho Palms operational in Mahikeng, as it has a rich and important local history”.   Atherton further explained that the resort has struggled in recent years to make ends meet and the launching of this Phase 1 project will help in sustaining the operation in Mahikeng by offering a viable hospitality location at Mmabatho Palms. Sadly, a failure to relocate the casino and the impending opening of a bingo licence in Mahikeng will most likely result in its closure. The opening of the new restaurant was attended by several local dignitaries. In attendance at the launch and ribbon cutting was Non-Executive Peermont Global North West Board Member Gabriel Dikgatswi, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality Executive Mayo Khumalo Molefe, Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo, and North West Gambling Board Accounting Authority Moeketsi Senqhi.
“We are delighted to be able to offer a top-class restaurant again,’ says Peermont Hospitality Executive Dave Milne. ‘Mmabatho Palms is an iconic resort and it means a lot to the people of Mahikeng for us to now be able take this big step in hospitality operations again”.  The Palmetto Restaurant and Lounge invites guests to step into a stylishly contemporary space, complete with a sleek, modern bar and lounge, perfect for unwinding. Punctuated with vibrant floral fabrics and lush greenery, guests will be transported you to a world where every detail is an ode to the environment that bears its name. The menu caters to all tastes offering everything from meat to seafood dishes.  The launch signals Mmabatho Palms’ dedication to delivering an extraordinary blend of superior service, luxury, and culinary excellence.
