Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Many happy kilometres is how Hanneke Badenhorst describes the 250 parkruns she has under her belt.
This Stilfontein grandmother is no stranger to walking or even running as she has finished more than one Tankwa Camino and also the Boesmanland Camino.
She joined the parkrun community in December 2014 and through “illness and health’’ completed her 250th parkrun on Saturday June 7. “It has been a long journey. It is not always possible to be able to do a parkrun every Saturday due to illness and other commitments like quilting meetings and so on.’’
She celebrated the achievement with cupcakes after thinking her walking days are over when she had to undergo brain surgery after a tumor developed in her head. “I suffered a seizure just two months after Boesmanland. So I had to have a brain operation and praise God, the tumor was not cancerous. However, the whole tumor could not be removed because it was on a blood vessel. Recovery also took a long time, but I was determined to get to my 250th parkrun, so I slowly walked myself back to health,’’ she said afterwards.
