Initiation schools shut down
Lentswe, Mahikeng - With the winter initiation season barely starting the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) has already shut down 14 illegal initiation schools and rescued 67 male initiates in Bojanala Platinum, Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Ngaka Modiri Molema Districts. The shutdowns were done during the extensive monitoring operations across the province to ensure that all schools operating during the period are compliant with the Customary Initiation Act of 2021, which provides for the effective regulation of customary initiation practices.

NWU Medical School another step closer
Lentswe, Potchefstroom - The future of the NWU’s Desmond Tutu School of Medicine was further consolidated with the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the university and the NW Department of Health. This signing took place on Tuesday June 24 in Potchefstroom. “It is a privilege to be able to celebrate another milestone in the establishment of our medical school,” said Prof Awie Kotzé, executive dean of the Faculty of Health

Suspect caught with firearms, ammo
Lentswe, Orkney - A Lesotho national was scheduled to appear in the local magistrate’s court to face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms, unlawful possession of ammunition, two counts of attempted murder and contravention of the Dangerous Weapons Act. The 31-year-old suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Monday June 23. He is also facing an additional charge of contravention of the Immigration Act.
