BONUS - RUSTENBURG - The collaboration between Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital and MediCare Private Hospital Rustenburg has resulted in improving access to affordable, quality health care for the underserved populations through performing operations aimed at reducing JST Hospital surgical backlog.
According to JST spokesperson, Kagiso Mbaiwa, the reduction of surgical backlog was done in celebrating Nelson Mandela Month on Friday, 1 August to Saturday, 2 August.
A team of Doctors and Nurses from both hospitals commenced operations on patients from Job Shimankana Tabane hospital, where various lipoma cases were successfully operated at MediCare Private Hospital in Rustenburg.
Lipoma is a slow growing non-cancerous tumor made of fat cells. They are typically soft, moveable and painless. Some of the patients being operated on have been on the waiting list since 2022, emanating from challenges such as theatre time and priority being given to trauma cases. Ten lipoma and eight adenototosillar hypertrophy (ATH) cases, which refers to the enlargement of both the adenoids and tonsils, were operated by the team.
Commenting on this milestone, the Acting Chief Executive Officer for Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital, Ms Ellen Dineo Moromane, indicated that despite advances in healthcare, many communities in Rustenburg and the broader province continue to face barriers to timely and affordable medical services. “Surgical backlogs particularly in ear, nose and throat and ophthalmology highlight the urgent need for collaborative action,” lamented Moromane
Moromane said that Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital has fostered sustainable collaboration between public and private healthcare sectors, stakeholders and medical institutions. She further said that the collaboration has set precedent for future initiatives that promote healthcare equity, efficiency and high-quality care.
“As Medicare Hospital we are excited to have partnered with Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital, as we do marathon surgery to close off Mandela Month,” said Hospital Manager, Fabion Bennett. He further said that Medicare Private Hospital and Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital are committed to making a meaningful impact in the community and change their lives through this marathon.
