Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The recent killing of a widowed father in his home in Songloed sent shockwaves through the city. At the time of going to press on Wednesday November 26, the police confirmed that nobody has been arrested for the murder of Matloko Moitshane (54).

He was killed in the early hours of Friday November 21 after suffering a gunshot wound to his chest during a home invasion. Robbers gained entry through a bedroom window and woke the dad and his children. That is when the nightmare started.

Klerksdorp Record was told that his 12-year-old son witnessed his dad being shot in their living room. Moitshane worked as a qualified nurse in the maternity ward of Klerksdorp Hospital.

A lot has been speculated about the shooting and Matloko’s brother, Malefo Khomba, who is also the family spokesperson, said the incident is very traumatising to their loved ones.

“My brother only has two kids, the boy who witnessed the shooting and a 17-year-old daughter who was in the bedroom looking for cell phones when she heard the shot. It is so bad. She heard how her father pleaded for his life. He said he has two kids to take care of after his wife died during Covid. She ran to the living room, where my brother died in her arms.”

He added the boy is traumatised but still went to school to write exams as if he “doesn’t realise what he witnessed’’. He doesn’t want to talk about what he saw, and is receiving counselling.

A neighbour, Theuns Olivier, came to the children’s rescue when the boy called him for help. He arrived on the scene first. Olivier is a karate instructor and knows the family as the son trains with him. His security camera also picked up the robbers carrying the family’s flat screen TV down the street. He has supplied the police with this footage.

“The children are in Bloemfontein at present. My mother, their granny, is taking the killing very badly and cannot imagine how somebody can just go into a house and kill somebody. In this case, her son. The family is traumatized,” his brother said.

Matloko who has the nickname Lux was loved among friends and family.

The DA described the shooting as senseless violence. “This is a perfect example of how crime has gotten out of hand in the city. We are calling on the police to act and arrest those responsible,’’ said ward councillor Pieter Swart.

Moitshane’s funeral will be held on Saturday November 29. His service will take place at the Auditorium, Civic Centre at 07:00.
