Lentswe, Orkney - An inquest has been opened by the police following the death of four soldiers who were on duty in Orkney as part of Operation Vala Umgodi - an operation that deals with illegal mining activities. President Cyril Ramaphosa also extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the fallen soldiers. They were deployed on a 24 hour shift at Shaft 3, a dormant mining shaft situated in Orkney, near the disused Oppenheimer stadium which has been a hot spot for illegal mining.
City Mall declared safe
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - City Mall in Klerksdorp was evacuated on Friday morning July 5. Employees of shops inside the shopping centre told Lentswe that the structure of the building has apparently been compromised. Steven Mpato from Matlosana Municipality’s Fire and Safety confirmed this saying there are fears the columns in the basement can collapse. “We are pro-active in preventing a disaster,’’ he said.
Bryoni on Miss Supranational stage
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Miss Supranational South Africa Bryoni Govender made it into the top 12 of the competition. Harashta Haifa Zahra of Indonesia was crowned Miss Supranational at the 15th edition of the competition which was held in Nowy Sacz in Poland on Saturday night July 7. South Africa’s Fezile Mkhize took the Mister Supranational 2024 crown last week.
Warriors on wheels on arts stage
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A group of local dancers took their show to the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. Warriors on Wheels performed at the PJ’s Theatre. They comprise physically challenged dancers from Khuma and Matlosana. They were invited to participate at the annual National Arts Festival to perform among the best in the country.
New councillor sworn in
Lebogang Itebogeng was formally sworn in as a Party Representative (PR) Councillor by Senior Magistrate Marionette Kirsten. The formality was presided over by the City of Matlosana’s Speaker of Council, Cllr Stella Mondlane.
