Lentswe, Klerksdorp - An intelligence driven operation led police members to a house in Kanana last week, where two hunting rifles, a pistol and ammunition were seized. According to Capt Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson, two suspects (aged 24 and 42) were arrested for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition on July 24.

Lentswe, Vierfontein - A mine employee who was arrested with amalgam underground at Kopanang mine was fined R10 000 or a two year prison sentence. Amalgam is a mixture of mercury and another metal. “A case of possession of Amalgam was registered and the miner was charged and appeared in Vierfontein Magistrate Court. “The case was investigated by Det Sgt Martin Tlaitlai of Operation Vala Umgodi Investigation Team,” said Capt Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson. Mavecua Fransisco Micas, who is a Mozambiquecan, was found guilty and sentenced on July 15.

Lentswe, Potchefstroom - A Klerksdorp man was arrested in Collerville last week for possession of a suspected stolen Chevrolet Aveo. Hugo Stevenson (49) appeared in court after his arrest on July 23. According to Lt Col Amanda Funani, police spokesperson, the vehicle was reported stolen in June last year. “Detectives from different vehicle crime investigation units conducted an operation last week which led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of five vehicles.’’

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Two local opera singers competed in a prestigious competition in Pretoria over the weekend and they are through to the final. Tshepo Makabe, bass-baritone, and Lebogang Polori, mezzo soprano, competed in the Soli competition of the Tshwane Choral Music Association at Eersterus Hall on Saturday July 27. The competition saw 54 singers taking part and both were invited back to compete in the final in November. Tshepo and Lebogang go to the same church, Uniting Reformed Church (Modimo wa Boikanyo). Their love for choral and opera music started there, from intermediate to senior choir and they further sang for community choirs.
