Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Ntsie “Big Mike” Makgoe, founder of the Big Mike Foundation, is supporting youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since 2014, he has been running a community gym with the purpose of motivating young people to live healthy lifestyles and make positive life choices. Over the years, their work has grown into various community programs that are open to everyone. Currently, they run several initiatives, including school campaigns, talent shows, and a Heritage programme called “Back to the Basics.”
Through the back-to-school programme, they organise school shoes, uniforms, school bags, and book covers for children in need.
They host talent shows where young people are given a platform to showcase their talents. This initiative helps keep them engaged and away from alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse. During Heritage Month, their “Back to the Basics” programme teaches young people about their culture and identity. They hosted a celebration in December to recognise and celebrate achievements made throughout the year.
All the activities take place at a park near the gym, which was once a dumping site and has now been transformed into a safe and welcoming space for the community. During events, they ensure that children are accommodated with jumping castles, sound systems, stretch tents, and catering so that they are able to eat and enjoy themselves, especially those who would otherwise go without.
At this stage, they are seeking assistance from good Samaritans and partners who may be willing to support their organisation financially, so that they can continue and expand this important work.
