STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Raees Ahmed Khan, a Grade 11 learner from Vryburg High School, has made the town proud by being one of two South African young science stars selected to participate in the ExpoCiencias Nacional in Villahermosa, Mexico, from 3 to 7 December 2024. Raees was nominated by a panel of experts at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF), held in September.

The event will bring together over 1 500 young scientists from around the world, ranging from middle school to university level. Raees will showcase his award-winning project, the “Portable Automated Healthcare Device (PAHD),” which combines a blood oxygen monitor, thermometer, and glucose monitoring system into a single, efficient device. This innovation addresses the urgent need for accessible first-aid solutions in underserved communities. Raees will depart from OR Tambo International Airport on 30 November, traveling via Paris before heading to Mexico. Joining him at the ExpoCiencias Nacional is Aman Pati, a Grade 11 learner from Kingfisher High School in Limpopo, who will present his theoretical “Revolutionizer” mechanism. This project proposes a fuel-free, eco-friendly solution for rocket launches, targeting reduced costs and zero black carbon emissions. Ms. Mologadi Motshele, Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, expressed excitement over the students’ achievements, emphasizing the role of STEM education in preparing future leaders. Parthy Chetty, Eskom Expo Executive Director, highlighted the importance of international collaboration, marking the return of South Africa to a Mexico-hosted science fair since 2017, noting the long-term benefits of events like ExpoCiencias Nacional in fostering global connections and innovation.
“These events allow our learners to network and collaborate with like-minded peers, all skilled and passionate about engineering and innovation. We extend our best wishes to our science stars, Aman and Raees, as they embark on this exciting journey of discovery,” said Chetty. Raees and Aman are wished the best of luck as they represent South Africa on this prestigious platform, where about 500 Mexican projects and 12 international projects from Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa are expected to be presented at the upcoming event, which aims to celebrate science, technology, and culture. Their journey is a testament to the power of innovation, dedication, and the spirit of discovery. “!ke e: /xarra //ke” – Diverse people unite.
