RUSTENBURG HERALD - PILANESBERG - A Spanish tourist was trampled to death by an elephant herd in the Pilanesberg National Park just outside Rustenburg on Sunday.
The incident happened while the 43-year-old man was approaching an adult female elephant on foot in an attempt to get a better photograph of the animal.

Though the tourist was warned by several family members who were with him in his vehicle, he did not heed the warnings and proceeded to approach the large female and a number of other elephants of the herd at a spot quite close to the road on which they were travelling. The man was accompanied by his fiancée and two of her friends and entered the reserve through the Bakgatla Gate. The man was declared dead on the scene. The case has in meantime been handed over to the police for further investigation.
