Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Klerksdorp bids a fond farewell to one of its most distinguished citizens, well-known attorney Michael Waks, who is retiring after 59 years of practising law.
Michael (81) and his beloved wife, Marlene, are embarking on a new chapter, moving to a retirement village in Johannesburg to enjoy their golden years together.
Michael Waks, a figure synonymous with legal excellence and community dedication in Klerksdorp, announced his retirement earlier this year. His journey in law began with studies at Witwatersrand University, followed by articles at Deneys Reitz in Johannesburg before completing them with Julius Rudolph right here in Klerksdorp in 1966.
Admitted as an attorney on May 6, 1968, he quickly established his mark, later co-founding a firm with Bobby Brady and currently practising alongside Selwyn Silent at the renowned Waks Silent Inc.
“The law is in our blood,” Michael once shared, reflecting on a family steeped in law. But his commitment to the community extended far beyond the courtroom. Michael has been a cornerstone of Klerksdorp’s community life, actively involved in organisations like Round Table and Rotary, where he served as President and was honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow.
For over 30 years, he chaired the local Jewish community, even leading Friday night services in the absence of a rabbi.
Moving to Klerksdorp in 1966, Michael witnessed its transformation from a smaller country town to the vibrant city it is today. He and Marlene raised their three children here, and now cherish their grandchildren.
From enjoying golf and early morning walks to tackling crosswords and passionately supporting Manchester United, Michael has always embraced life with enthusiasm.
In preparing for their move, the couple said they will always be thankful to Klerksdorp and its people.
