Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The city’s Lions Club marked a remarkable milestone over the weekend celebrating their 60 year anniversary.
The event took place on Saturday October 18. Founded in 1965, the Klerksdorp Lions Club has been a beacon of hope and support for the local community, embodying the Lions International motto: “We Serve.”
From vision screenings and disaster relief to youth programs and feeding schemes, Lions clubs around the world continue to make a difference where it’s needed most.
The event was graced by Council Chairman Lion Ian King, the highest-ranking Lion in South Africa, who delivered a powerful keynote address. He emphasized the importance of community care, urging members to continue their vital work in uplifting those in need. “Service is not just what we do - it’s who we are,” he said.
In a moment of great pride, he presented the prestigious Louis Volks Award to Zone Chairperson Riaan Wilken. This award, named after one of the founding figures of Lions in South Africa, is one of the highest honours a Lion can receive. It recognizes exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and outstanding service to the Lions movement and the broader community.
Club President Mina van Biljon also took to the stage to honour the club’s members, presenting certificates of appreciation to each Lion for their tireless efforts and commitment. “Every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to the greater good,” she said.
The evening culminated in the announcement of the Lion of the Year 2024–2025, awarded jointly to Marie and Riaan Wilken. Their passion, teamwork, and consistent involvement in club activities made them stand out as shining examples of Lionism in action.
The Klerksdorp Lions Club also thanked their generous sponsors who attended the evening, and whose support throughout the year made many of the club’s initiatives possible.
