Klerksdorp Record, Stilfontein - The grandmother and her boyfriend who were arrested in connection with the death of a two-year-old child in Stilfontein, are still behind bars.
The case against Marietjie Niewenhuizen and Carel Fouché was postponed for the second time this week to May 27. It is suspected that they will apply for bail next week.
The community is still reeling from shock after the death of baby Kelvin Niewenhuizen in his grandmother’s home in Stilfontein came to light. The home in Clubview Street is notorious as a drug den.
His body was discovered last week underneath a blanket in one of the bedrooms. Klerksdorp Record was told that the post mortem to determine the cause of death was concluded earlier this week.
Cllr Portia Burrell said a date for the funeral will be determined as soon as the body is released to the mortuary.
In response, the DA said they share the community’s sadness and is disturbed by the tragic case. “This tragedy underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to social welfare, law enforcement, and community safety. No child should ever be subjected to such suffering, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that vulnerable members of our society are protected and cared for.’’
