Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Several towns, including Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad, are facing a severe service delivery crisis, with widespread failures in sanitation, water, and electricity supply.
The Democratic Alliance has condemned the collapse of basic services in Hartbeesfontein, Wolmaransstad, and Matlosana, demanding urgent intervention and accountability from municipal leadership.
The sanitation crisis is particularly dire. In Hartbeesfontein, the absence of a functional honey sucker service has caused raw sewage to overflow into streets and homes, creating a serious public health hazard. A similar situation is unfolding in Orkney, where failing sewerage infrastructure leads to constant overflows, which the DA attributes to a lack of maintenance and slow municipal response.
In Wolmaransstad, the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality is under fire for prolonged electricity outages that have crippled the town’s Central Business District. The DA reports that outdated infrastructure, a reliance on temporary fixes, and the use of distant contractors have brought local economic activity to a standstill.
Several residents phoned Klerksdorp Record this week, complaining about the ongoing problems in the town saying businesses are struggling to stay afloat amid these conditions.
Meanwhile, the Matlosana Municipality faces a looming water infrastructure collapse. The crucial Ellaton Water Pump Station is reportedly operating at only 30% capacity after two consecutive multi-million rand contracts for essential upgrades were terminated due to poor performance.
The DA has called for urgent action plans, immediate and sustainable repairs, and full accountability from officials.
The party has stated it will continue to pressure the municipalities to address these failures, which it describes as a violation of residents’ constitutional right to a safe and healthy environment.
