Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Klerksdorp said Workers Day was not just a holiday but that South Africans were celebrating the tireless efforts of the workers, breadwinners who drive the economy of our country and prosperity. Workers were honoured in a special way for making our lives better through the goods produced and services rendered. This year marks 31 years of democracy, a significant and remarkable progress has been achieved through the current labour laws.

“However in sectors as farming and domestic work, workers continue to endure suffering and oppression by their employers,’’ the commission said in a statement.

“It is ironic that farm workers, the backbones of our economy and the cultivators of our food are the once who are suffering from exploitation and unbearable labour practices.”

The Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Klerksdorp, continue to speak against worker exploitation. “We are in partnership with the department of Labour to provide vulnerable workers and their communities with workshops aimed at capacitating them to know and understand their labour rights.’’

Their office is situated at C12 23rd Street, Jouberton (Roma Ledibeng Centre). They offer free community advice which is staffed with three trained community based paralegals. Justice and Peace through its partners assist the community on matters related to unfair dismissals, mediation, conflict resolution, advice, and capacity building on labour laws. Office hours are from Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 15:00.
