Lentswe, Klerksdorp - This week, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (Dr KKDM) is hosting the Town Hall Conference of Parties as build up to the G20 Summit that will be held in Durban next month. The Town Hall COPs are inspired by the global United Nations Climate Change Conferences. The event will bring climate dialogue and decision-making closer to local communities.
This platform is bringing together mayors, councillors, community representatives, businesses, academia, youth, and civil society to strengthen collaboration for climate resilience and showcase district-level climate projects and identify opportunities for climate finance.
They also want to raise awareness on the Climate Change Act.
“Taking into account the freak floods, extreme heat and cold conditions our district has experienced in recent months, it is prudent that we host and provide inputs on this critical topic,” says District Executive Mayor, Councillor Nikiwe Num.
The conference is presented in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE), ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
