A cloud of black smoke billowed over Orkney on Monday evening February 2 when people blocked all entrances and exits to the town with burning tyres. Cars were even refused entry from Milton Avenue into Carlyle Street (photo). Lentswe was told it was a service delivery protest by the Kanana community. The roads were cleared by 21:00 and traffic resumed.
The following day, Executive Mayor Fikile Mahlophe addressed the Kanana community about the Letsatsi solar plant project, following their march to the municipality in Klerksdorp that morning to deliver a memorandum concerning issues affecting Kanana.
The delevopment of the solar plant is situated close to Orkney and expected to provide jobs and a boost in infrastructure to the municipality.
