Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Winnie Molapo is a well-known unionist. She passed away recently and will be buried this weekend. Winnie (72) was a central activist in the Jouberton Civic Association and Mass Democratic Movement in the eighties, working with well-known figures such as Sylvia Mamza Benjamin, Pinky Pooe and Dikeledi Sebetlela. The JCA was blessed by leaders such as Goods Matswetlane, JC Nxamakele and Ofentse Mogale, who all became executive mayors of Matlosana. She understood that a thriving economy depends on the well-being of its workers and fought to ensure that the country’s workforce in the retail sector received fair treatment and protection under the law, during her tenure at Saccawu in the ten WTvl.

She was able to transcend an unjust system into the leadership of the Klerksdorp Transitional Council.

This period of building an agency for all the people in Kosh was very difficult, fraught with fear and suspicions.

She guided the block committees in the art of negotiations and her family home was the nerve centre for meetings, welcomed by her husband Solly, son Lerato, and cousin, Mzayifani.

She was a shop steward and worker representative at Pick n Pay and no union official met with management with her not being involved.

Her funeral service will take place at 07:00, on Saturday September 27, at Jouberton Hall.
