Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - In a municipal clean-up operation last week in the CBD, the Matlosana Municipality shut down four guesthouses for not meeting legal standards, casting a spotlight on unregulated accommodation.
The municipality did not disclose the names of the guesthouses but according to photographs taken during the operation it looks like the guesthouses are located in Bishop Desmond Tutu Street (former Park Street). In addition to the business crackdown, the operation also led to the apprehension of two undocumented foreign nationals, who have since been handed over to police. Five businesses also had their electricity disconnected due to overdue accounts.
Ntswaki Makgetha, municipal spokesperson, said the operation focused on ensuring businesses comply with municipal by-laws and safety regulations. It was a coordinated team effort from the Local Economic Development Department, Traffic, Housing and District Health Services.
The City of Matlosana has issued a stern warning to all business owners, reiterating the critical importance of adhering to local regulations, settling accounts promptly, and fully cooperating with authorities.
