Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - More than 120 young people are being equipped with knowledge about the criminal justice system, their rights and responsibilities, and practical ways to contribute to safer neighbourhoods. In a powerful demonstration of faith in action, the Roman Catholic Church in Klerksdorp has partnered with the Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF) to implement the Communities and Justice Programme (CJP), an experiential crime prevention and safety awareness initiative that empowers the youth to become champions for justice in their communities.

“The CJP is a very impactful programme. What drives the positive impact is the collaboration between civil society, the government and communities,” says Irene Ramatisa, NW Provincial Coordinator for the SSAF.

This women-led collaboration was sparked when members from various Roman Catholic churches in Klerksdorp learned about the positive impact of the CJP in surrounding schools. Recognising its potential to address local safety challenges, they approached Ramatisa, to bring the programme to their congregations and communities.

Through workshops, mentorship, and community dialogues, the CJP fosters respect for the law, social responsibility, and active citizenship.

She emphasised the importance of the partnership. “We are addressing crime today but also building a generation that values safety, respect, and unity. The Roman Catholic Church has shown that faith and action can work hand in hand to build a better future.”

Retired General Riah Phiyega, CEO of the Safer South Africa Foundation, praised the church for playing an active role in crime prevention: “Churches are trusted pillars in our communities. This partnership in Klerksdorp is a shining example of how collaboration between faith-based organisations and civil society can make our streets safer and our communities stronger.”

The CJP is designed to bridge the gap between communities and the criminal justice system, ensuring that young people understand how justice works and how they can be part of the solution. By combining the moral guidance of the Church with the expertise of the Safer South Africa Foundation, the Klerksdorp initiative is creating a sustainable model for crime prevention that can be replicated.

Through the CJP, SSAF collaborates with stakeholders in the criminal justice sector (including SAPS, Correctional Services, and the Traffic Department), and the South African Human Rights Commission.

The CJP entails practical learning experiences, including visits to local magistrate’s courts and correctional centres.

Here, the youth gain first-hand exposure to the inner workings of the criminal justice system and hear personal testimonies from their peers about the realities of life behind bars.
