STELLALANDER-PUDIMOE: In the true spirit of Nelson Mandela International Day, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of police in the North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, handed over a newly built house to the Boitsemang family, a single mother and her six children, who lost their home and all belongings in a devastating fire in 2023.

This year’s Mandela Day theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” came to life on Friday morning, 18 July as approximately 100 community members gathered at the Matlhako 2 Community Hall in Pudimoe to celebrate this heartwarming occasion. Under the leadership of Pudimoe Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Theresa Magile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Pudimoe Station, in partnership with the Community Police Forum (CPF), identified the Boitsemang family as beneficiaries of this year’s outreach initiative. Together with the tribal authority, local businesses, and various government departments, they mobilised resources to construct a new home for the family. The family, which includes six children ranging in age from two to 18, had been living in vulnerable conditions since the fire. The donation of the new home marks a significant turning point in their lives and reflects the Mandela Day ethos of uplifting those in need. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Commander Brigadier Tlotleng, the CPF Chairperson, and representatives from supporting departments and organisations. The highlight of the day was the official handover of the house, the second phase of the project, bringing tears of joy and renewed hope to the Boitsemang family. “This is what Mandela Day is all about, bringing lasting change to the lives of others. Through partnerships and community spirit, we have shown what is possible when we come together for a common cause,” said Lt Col Magile. The SAPS and CPF extend their gratitude to all donors and partners who made this project possible.
