RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - The North West Province of South Africa is known for its stunning natural beauty, from the rolling hills of the Magaliesberg mountains to the vast expanses of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
However, this beauty is under threat from devastating wildfires that can ravage the landscape and destroy entire ecosystems. That is why the North West Umbrella Fire Protection Association (NWUFPA) is working tirelessly to prevent and combat wildfires in the region.
Their mission
The NWUFPA is a collaborative effort between landowners, conservation agencies and firefighting teams who aim to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect the natural world. The NWUFPA is a team of dedicated professionals and students who work together to create firebreaks, conduct controlled burns and respond to emergency situations.
Saving lives and livelihoods
NWUFPA is proud to report that its efforts paid off on 22 August 2025, when the Association successfully saved the village of Ledig and Pilanesberg National Park from a devastating wildfire. This is the outcome of the Association's hard work and dedication: protecting lives, livelihoods, animals, food security and the province's fragile environment. This is why firebreaks are essential and why NWUFPA will continue to work tirelessly to prevent and combat wildfires in the region.
Importance of their work
The NWUFPA's efforts are crucial in protecting the region's biodiversity and preserving the natural beauty of the North West. Wildfires can have a devastating impact on the environment, causing loss of life, damage to property and destruction of ecosystems. By working together, the stakeholders can reduce the risk of wildfires and build a safer and more resilient future.
