Lentswe, Alabama - The Alabama community is ta-king a stand against crime, particularly gender based violence, in the form of a peaceful demonstration on Monday January 26. The protest will be held at the N12 circle (entrance of Ext 3 Alabama and Jouberton) and will proceed on the N12 to the entrance of Tower Mall.This is an organized march and the organizers have applied in terms of Gathering Act, 1993 ( Act no 5 of 1993) under Section 3 of the Act.
According to Ellen Ghina from Alabama, this march is in protest of the brutal killing of a Grade 11 learner and a 16 year old girl that was murdered by a foreign national. “There are many told and untold incidents as well as unresolved and cold cases that have played out in Alabama over the years. This is furthermore to express our collective pain, anger concern over the alarming high levels of crime, violence and the loss of innocent lives.’’
She said the North West MEC of Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng as well as the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Acting SAPS District Commissioner were invited to receive the memorandum.
Their demands include a permanent police station in Alabama and with immediate effect a satellite police station, increased police visibility in crime hot spots in Alabama, targeted operations against drug dealers and illegal weapons and closing down of drug houses, protection of vulnerable women and children etc.
“We are inviting all community stakeholders, churches, organized business, NPO’s and NGO’s, civil society groups etc. to stand in solidarity and we plea to everyone to come in numbers to support the cause.’’
